Volleyball Camp

This week, McKenna participated in the GVHS Bulldog Volleyball Camp.  Amazingly, with her crazy schedule, between drill team practice, softball games, and volleyball camp, she managed to get in as much volleyball as she could.

Day 1 - June 1st
After her 6:30 to 9:30 morning drill team practice, McKenna headed right on over to the GVHS new gym for day one of camp.  When she got there they were doing leadership / team building training.  After several activities, the girls headed outside where Matt Reber did a trust workshop.  He told the girls the importance of trusting your teammates and how that will help build their bond on and off the court.  He told them about the 'Trust Fall' and how you should trust your teammates to catch you from a 15' fall.  Then, of course, he asked who wanted to go first.  McKenna said that after 30 seconds of no one saying anything, she volunteered to go first.    I love this picture showing her right in the midst of the fall.  She said it was kinda scary, but knew she was in good hands.

After some team building activities, the girls were able to play some ball.  They learned a lot of things on technique and plays on the court.  At 5:00 that night, McKenna left the camp and headed to the softball fields to play a double header while the team went and did an activity in Fillmore.  About 11 that night, McKenna headed back to the high school where she joined up with the team for a sleepover  at the high school.  She said it was pretty funny because several boys knew there were there and did a really good job at keeping the girls up.  Just when they thought they were able to get some sleep, the boys were back at it (like at 3am) bouncing on the roof of the new gym.

Day 2 - June 2nd
Up and at it again at 6:00 am, McKenna went to her three hour drill team practice.  The remainder of the team went swimming and ate breakfast.  When McKenna got done with drill, back to the gym she went where this time the high school girls were teaching the youth girls that had signed up for their day camp.  McKenna had a lot of fun helping the younger girls learn how to serve.

After lunch and a little bit of court time, the next item on their schedule was to run the G-Hill.  This is something there were not too excited about.  McKenna said that Coach Reynolds told the girls that running the G-Hill is like their upcoming season of volleyball.  If you go at it with only a little momentum, then that's how your season will end, but if you go at it at full force, you can walk away as State Champs.  So the girls took off and ran what they could, only getting about half way up, they started to slow down and wanted to walk.  Coach made them turn and walk back down the hill to start over.  As a team they decided they wanted more for their season so they got a second chance.

So thankfully, after the second attempt, all the girls made it to the top of the G-Hill without stopping.  McKenna said it about killed her, but she did it!  Once to the top, McKenna said that Coach Reynolds told them how sweet the victory is at the top and at the end of the season this year, when they are State Champs, they will bring the school flag up to the top of the G and wave it for the valley to see and then they will go to the bottom to get on the fire truck to ride through town!

After the G-Hill run, the team headed back to the gym for some more court time.  At 5:00, they headed to Mayfield for games, dinner, activities, and a sleepover at the Overly home.  McKenna had a lot of fun, however, she was back at drill team at 8 to 9 that night, so afterwards, she was back up with the team for a sleepover.

Day 3 - June 3rd
The last day of camp, McKenna was up again early for her three hour drill team practice.  Afterwards, back to the gym where the girls had several hours of court time ahead of them.  They ate lunch, played some more volleyball and then headed to Manti where they were able to play some scrimmage games against Manti's volleyball team.  The GVHS Volleyball team did awesome, winning both the varsity games and jv games.   The parents were invited to the scrimmage games, so it was fun for me to go see how much progress McKenna had made in three days.  She played great.

After the games, the team went to Lakeside Grill to eat dinner.  It was a great way to end a great camp.  It was fun to hear Coach Reynolds talk about the growth the team has made in three days.  He told them that they played better today than they did their last game of volleyball, last year.  He encouraged the girls to keep playing, serving, hitting whatever it takes so when August comes, these girls are ready to play some volleyball.  I hope you are looking at a team of girls that will soon become State Champs!  Keeping our fingers crossed for an awesome season!

McKenna loved this experience!  She is extremely sore and completely wore out, but she said it was all worth it!
