GVHS Drill Team Tryouts

It seems like the Taylor household has been counting down the days to drill team tryouts for a really long time now.  It is hard to believe that the week that McKenna has been most nervous for, for such a long time, is finally here.  McKenna's week of drill team tryouts started out with early morning practices.   Each morning she was up and ready to be out the door at 6:30 am, where I would take her to the drill team room so she could learn the two new dances for part of what they needed to know for tryouts.  She was done by 7:30 and had to come finish up getting ready for school.  This early morning stuff was Monday-Thursday.  Fortunately enough, this was early because this girls schedule this week in the evenings was booked with something every night.  McKenna had so much fun going to these practices, she loved learning the military and dance routines that they needed to know for team portion of tryouts.

It is common for the girls trying out to bring a good luck prize to all the other girls.  McKenna decided to put a good luck tag on PowerAde's for each of the girls that were trying out.  It was fun to see the other treats and notes of encouragement that the other girls brought to share.

By the time Thursday afternoon came, she was so excited and ready to go do this!  She had practiced and practiced, that she was looking forward to getting this nerve racking portion over with and behind her.   There were 20 girls that tried out, so for tryouts, they divided the girls up in groups of four.  McKenna was lucky enough to be in the first group.  I was able to hang out in the hall for a bit after she was done and she just beamed.  She felt so confident in her performance in front of the judges.

At 6:00 pm the judging portion was open to the public.  Jeremy and I went and was able to watch the girls perform the dances that they had learned earlier in the week.  McKenna did awesome!  After the girls danced as a team, they divided the girls up again into their same groups of four.  This time around, they had to perform the same two dances, each two times.  When this portion was done, the judges wanted each girl to do individual impromptu dance.  This impromptu dance was not mention prior to tonight's show, so the girls had no clue they were supposed to do this.  McKenna nailed this section, she had all of the other girls cheering for her she did so awesome!  In fact, one of the advisors told her after that she scored the very highest on her impromptu dance, even higher than the returning girls that had been on drill team in the past.

After that portion of the judging was over, then it was just time before the results were posted.  All the girls had so much fun, feeling just relieved that it was over and then they had to wait for the anticipation of who made it as a G-Gette.  The girls all decided to hang out in the hall to patiently wait the posting of names.  After quite a while, they were told that that the results would be posted at 9:00 pm, so then everybody decided to grab a bite to eat.

The phone call came and the results were posted.  We ran to the school to see who was on the list.  The G-Gette's team for 2015-2016 will consist of 16 girls with two alternates.  McKenna made it!

It was late Thursday night that the excitement finally settled down and McKenna finally decided to try and get some sleep.  I was told at school when they posted the results that someone would be to our house to get McKenna at 5:30 am to take her to breakfast.  This is always done as a secret, so I had to play dumb while trying to get McKenna to pick up her bedroom.  She was a little curious why I was helping, but she kept telling me that she asked the other girls if they were going to eat breakfast together and they all told her no, so she really had no clue they were coming.

Friday morning came and I was up at 5 am to open the house and turn a light on so the girls could sneak upstairs to get her.  I of course was so excited for her, I couldn't get back to sleep.  She had a few girls come and kidnap her out of her bed while sleeping and made her go to breakfast in her pajamas.  She made it home around 7 am with her new G-Gette T-shirt.  This shirt is what all the girls wear to school today, so she was pretty excited!

Jeremy and I am so proud of her, she is a natural performer and what an amazing job she does.  We love her more than words can say and we can't even begin to tell her how proud we are of her!
