Carving Pumpkins

One thing about going and gathering pumpkins so early in the month, is the excitement that it brings to get them carved for Halloween.  So rather than waiting to carve them closer to Halloween, this year we let them work on them mid-month.   And after knowing how well it went, we will definitely be carving / painting them earlier in the month next year.

Thank goodness for Pinterest because that is where each of them gathered their ideas to make their own creation. Trey was the only one this year that decided he wanted to carve his pumpkin, the girls just wanted to paint theirs this year.  I was quite impressed with Trey this year, he did all the carvings all by himself.  First he drew details on his pumpkin and then right to work he went.  He carved the entire thing all by himself.

For the girls, the painting took a little bit longer.  There were several coats of paint applied to each pumpkin, so there was a little bit of down time to each one.  I was able to step in and help with the details on each pumpkin, which was a lot of fun for me because I haven't ever been much help in the past when they have carved their pumpkins.

McKenna had two pumpkins, one white and an orange one.  She painted a whole bunch of polka dots on the white one and then chevron stripes on her orange one.  Allyson, also had two pumpkins, one small one that she had brought home from school and then a larger one that she picked out at the pumpkin patch.  Her small one she spray painted black outside and then added an array of colors on it while she waited for her big one to try.  She had picked out a minion design off the Internet, so I did most of the detail work for her.  Tyra only focused on her one small pumpkin that she brought home from school.  She too wanted it spray painted black, but when she was through you would have never guessed it was black to start with.  I bet she put a half of  a dozen of layers of paint on it trying to get it just right!

Can I just say I love these four kiddos and their creative, whitty, crazy ways about each of them.  They sure made this such a fun afternoon doing one thing that they look forward to each year.  Lots of giggles with this crew!

Here is a collage of their final projects!  Each pumpkin turned out great.

I have to say that next year we will be decorating pumpkins early in the month again.  The kids have loved that they can look at their pumpkin all month long every time we go past the house.  It has made it so there wasn't that huge rush the night before Halloween to get them all carved for the big day, only to leave them out for a few days because Halloween was over.  This way they enjoyed them all month long!  And as an added bonus, it made our porch look so cute and spooky for the month of October.
